John Henry Newton was born July 24, 1725 and died December 21, 1807. He was a former slave-ship captain, and became an Anglican clergyman after his wonderful conversion. He wrote 'Amazing Grace' and then encouraged William Wilberforce to work hard for the abolition of slavery in Great Britain
