Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld lashed out at Syria today for continuing to allow shipments of military equipment into Iraq in defiance of US warnings.

Rumsfeld, who was speaking at a Pentagon news briefing today, was annoyed that after several closed and public warnings to Damascus that the Syrian government chose to continue it "hostile action".

The State Department announced last Friday that the US had received information that shipments of "military supplies and material and equipment," including night-vision goggles, had been entering Iraq from Syria.

Syria has dismissed the allegations.

During the Pentagon briefing today, Rumsfeld said: "We have seen that Syria is continuing to conduct itself the way it was prior to the time I said what I said."
