Foreign minister Silvan Shalom admitted Saturday: Just as the Egyptians never corked the Palestinians’ weapons smuggling tunnels from Sinai, they have avoided stemming the heavy flow of advanced arms into the Gaza Strip since Israel’s pull-back. The Palestinians have now acquired shoulder-launched anti-air and anti-tank missiles. As to the demand for Israel to supply side-arms and ammo to help the Palestinian police quell chaos, the minister said: the last thing the Palestinians are short of is weaponry. “It’s only a pretext for their own indecision to come to grips with breaking up the terrorist organizations.
