I know one thing — you will cover it in a very big fashion'.” Trump then stated that this mysterious announcement might impact the presidential election. For many months now, we have repeatedly heard warnings from Republican officials that President Obama might launch some type of "October Surprise" that he could manipulate in order to win the election. Now we learn that Republican officials might the ones who are planning a preemptive strike against Obama so close to the election that it can be called an "October Surprise". What is the definition of this term? This phrase originated during the 1972 election between Republican President Richard Nixon and his Democrat challenger, George McGovern. On October 26, 1972, twelve days before the election on November 7, the United States' chief negotiator, the presidential National Security Advisor Henry Kissinger, appeared at a press conference held at the White House and announced, 'We believe that peace is at hand'." Even though he would have won the election without this dramatic peace announcement just days before the election, observers believe strongly that this tactic added many votes to the Nixon column. This tactic might have been used again, in the 1980 presidential election between incumbent President Jimmy Carter and Republican candidate Ronald Reagan. The story is that Reagan's team conspired with the Iranians to delay the release of the 52 American hostages seized November 9, 1979, until after Reagan had won the election and was inaugurated. The objective of this secret agreement was to deny Carter the election bonanza he would have received had the release occurred just before the election. No one was ever able to prove this story. But, the term has widened to include any action which a candidate takes against his opponent just days before the election, an action which causes many voters to switch their vote. Since the action occurs just days before the election, the victim is unable to mount an effective defense. What is the mysterious announcement to which Donald Trump refers? No one really knows, but given Trump's heavy involvement in the "birther issue", i.e., whether Barack Obama was born in the United States or somewhere overseas, this issue seems logical for Trump to be planning a preemptive strike.
