NOW THAT CLINTON HAS ASKED FOR OUR FORGIVENESS, DO WE NOW ALLOW HIM TO STAY IN OFFICE?

President Clinton addressed an "Interfaith" group of ministers, pastors, rabbis, and priests and seemed genuinely to ask for Biblical forgiveness. Did he really? Further, if he did, does that mean he should stay in office? We will learn today the difference between Personal Forgiveness of Sin and Justice.

THE CUTTING EDGE

NEWS BRIEF: "Official White House text of President Clinton's address to religious leaders at the White House prayer breakfast", Washington Post 9/11/98.

When President Clinton addressed the nation on August 17, 1998, addressing the Starr inquiry into his relationship with Monica Lewinsky, he angered many people by the tone of his speech, by what he said, and by what he did not say.

The President's tone of voice was harsh and very combative. Rather than exhibiting real remorse, Clinton attacked Independent Council Kenneth Star for just trying to do his job. Starr, by the way, was appointed by a panel of three (3) judges of the Court of Appeals, as they were acting upon an urgent request by Attorney Janet Reno. If Clinton needs to be angry with anyone for having Starr nipping his heels, he should be angry with his own appointee, Attorney General Janet Reno.

Further, the President boldly told the nation that this entire affair and its aftermath were "none of our business". I could not see where the President was holding his hands, but I wondered if he was flipping the American people his finger! His attitude and his choice of words, backed up by his body language, seemed strongly to suggest that he was flipping us all off.

Finally, the President never said he was truly repentant for his actions, and he never asked for forgiveness. Clinton just seemed to be truly sorry that he had finally been caught, just like my children acted on many occasions just before the spanking began. Indeed, I believe this is exactly the scenario we are now witnessing. Clinton is acting very contrite and asking for forgiveness now, hoping we will not now spank him mightily for his actions.

On Friday, September 11, 1998, Clinton addressed an Interfaith Prayer Breakfast, attended by an assortment of pastors, ministers, rabbis, and priests. Clinton showed remorse, contrition, and a "broken heart". He asked for forgiveness. While you can read the full text of the President's speech before the Prayer Breakfast, let us now examine what constitutes Biblical repentance. What are the Biblical steps for forgiveness?

True Repentance involves an immediate time frame once the person is aware of their sin.

  1. The Time For Repentance -- "Behold, now is the accepted time; now is the day of salvation". [2 Corinthians 6:2]. The Bible states repeatedly that genuine repentance occurs as soon as the guilty person realizes they have sinned. In this case, I find it highly suspicious that the President refused to be contrite, and of a "broken spirit", and asking forgiveness, until the wolves were nipping his heels and he realized he could bob and weave no more. [See also Psalm 69:13, "acceptable time"; also Hebrews 3:13, 15, "But exhort one another daily, while it is called Today; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin ... While it is said, Today if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts ..."]. If the President had made this forgiveness speech on January 16, 1998, where he pointed his finger at the American people and denied having a sexual relationship with Lewinsky, I would be far more likely to believe him. But, as a parent who has spanked his children on many occasions, I remember the tears of regret just before the spanking began. Of course, these tears were not because my child was sorry he or she had done wrong; rather, the tears flowed because my child was sorry they were about to be punished; and the tears flowed because they were trying, at this late date, to keep me from spanking them. I fear this is the spectacle we are witnessing here.
  2. True repentance involves the following steps:

  3. Acknowledgement of the enormity of the sin -- Clinton did admit to his sin, but still wanted to avoid being punished for his crimes. Further, Clinton never did admit the enormity of the crimes for which he had been indicted by the Starr Report to Congress. Listen to some Scripture bearing on this issue:
    1. "Wash me thoroughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin. For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me. Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest." [Psalm 51:2-4, David's prayer, once he had been confronted with his sin with Bathsheba] Notice that David instantly confessed once he had been confronted with his sin. David never pointed his finger at his subjects and denied the affair. David never told the Prophet Nathan, or his Jewish subjects, that the affair was "none of their business".
    2. "Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in thy sight, and am no more worthy to be called thy son." [Luke 15:18, the prayer of the Prodigal Son to his Father after he had left home. Note that the Father restored him to sonship but this son was not the leader of the nation.]
  1. Godly Sorrow For Sin -- " Now I rejoice, not that ye were made sorry, but that ye sorrowed to repentance: for ye were made sorry after a godly manner ... For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation ..." [2 Corinthians 7:9-10] Clinton did say he was very sorry, and he assured us that his sorrow was "genuine". But, somehow, I sense that his sorrow was not of this "godly sorrow" variety.
  2. Forsaking Sin -- " Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD, and he will have mercy upon him; and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon." [Isaiah 55:7]. Clinton did say that he would forsake his sin.
  3. Asking Forgiveness through the Shed Blood of Jesus Christ -- "But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin." [1 John 1:7] "Without the shedding of blood there is no remission for sin." [Hebrews 9:22] "I AM the Way, the Truth, and the Life; no man cometh unto the Father but by Me." [John 14:6] Did you notice that Clinton did not once invoke the name of Jesus Christ? Most of the Biblical passages from which Clinton quoted were Old Testament. Remember, a belief in God alone does not save anyone [James 2:19]; yet, groups like Freemasonry and Apostate Churches today are trying to get to Heaven without Jesus Christ. I find it very suspicious that Clinton is trying to say that he has sought forgiveness from God, even though he never spoke of Jesus Christ even once. With his Southern Baptist training, Clinton knows he cannot receive salvation except through Jesus Christ. Thus, I am very suspect of the supposed contrition and forgiveness being sought by Clinton.
  4. Recognizing that you have been given a new heart, clean from sin -- " the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin. If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." [1 John 1:7b-9] Clinton did quote the famous Psalm 51, where David asked God to create a new heart and spirit [verse 10]; however, since we are now under the Second Covenant of Jesus Christ, such forgiveness must come through Christ. I find it highly suspicious that Clinton made no mention of Jesus Christ.

Therefore, we view with great skepticism this newest expression of sorrow, asking for repentance, and acknowledging that he had sinned. But, we find even more troubling parts of the President's speech, that make us even more convinced his repentance is not genuine, after all.

  1. A person who has genuinely repented through Jesus Christ would bend over backwards to cooperate with the lawful investigation of Independent Council Starr. Instead, the President thundered, " I will instruct my lawyers to mount a vigorous defense, using all available appropriate arguments." Thus, even as he is supposed to having undergone genuine, Biblical forgiveness, he is threatening to fight, using the same corrupt legal advice and council he has demonstrated in the past.
  2. A person who has genuinely repented through Jesus Christ would recognize the validity of the lawful investigation of Starr. Rather, the President repeated the assertion of his blindly loyal staff that Starr's investigation had wrongfully invaded his private life. "... the bounds of presidency have been excessively and unwisely invaded." I repeat again, that Starr had no choice but to print all the lurid sexual detail because Clinton and his corrupt lawyers repeatedly insisted that the kind of sex Clinton had with Lewinsky did not really constitute sex. Therefore, Clinton has only himself to blame for this "invasion of privacy".
  3. The President said that he had apologized to Monica and her family. " I have asked all for their forgiveness". Yet, Boston radio station, WRKO, 680 AM, called the Lewinsky family to see if the President had asked for their forgiveness. A spokesman for the Lewinsky's said they had received no such request for forgiveness from Clinton. Therefore, we can only conclude that Clinton is lying again, right in the middle of his "Biblical" forgiveness speech!

Even in his "contrition", the President continues to lash out at the legal investigation of Starr. This is not the action of a genuinely repentant person. Therefore, we reject the President's "forgiveness" on the grounds we have stated above. We believe he is not genuine, but is only trying now to talk the parent out of punishing him.

But, for the sake of argument, let us say we accept the President's words at face value that he has genuinely repented, according to Biblical doctrine. If that is really true, then Mr. Clinton is saved and is on his way to Heaven. His sins with Ms Lewinsky have been forgiven through Jesus Christ, and have been blotted out. We would say, if this were true, that Clinton had received personal forgiveness from God, which has to be through Jesus Christ and His shed blood.

Personal forgiveness can be received from family, friends, associates, and the citizens of the nation.

However, God has established a national code of Justice that runs on a different, parallel path with personal forgiveness. If a person who is guilty of an action which the nation recognizes as a crime, can genuine personal forgiveness make it possible for that person to escape the penalty prescribed by law for that crime?

Absolutely not. Absolutely Biblically not!

Remember, also, that we Americans live in a system governed by Law, not by the edicts of kings. Our Forefathers made sure that they gave us such a system.

Listen to the Holman Bible Dictionary explain God's Justice as it is extended to the laws of the nation. " Justice has two major aspects. First, it is the standard by which penalties are assigned for breaking the obligations of the society. Second, justice is the standard by which the advantages of social life are handed out, including material goods, rights of participation, opportunities, and liberties. It is the standard for both punishment and benefits and thus can be spoken of as a plumb line. "I will make justice the measuring line and righteousness the plummet." [Isaiah 28:17a, Parallel Bible, KJV/Amplified Commentary]

Did you notice the words, above, "breaking the obligations of the society"? Just because a person guilty of a crime asks for personal forgiveness as we have explained above does not mean that he can expect to escape the "obligations of society" which demand the penalty as prescribed by the law of the nation.

Let us examine some of God's pronouncements to Israel at the time Israel was preparing to become the Chosen Nation that God intended to occupy the "Promised Land", Palestine. God Himself passed the laws by which Israel was to be ruled. In all cases of Capital Punishment, God stated that the guilty person was to be killed for a particular crime, " that there be no wickedness among you" [Leviticus 20:14c] God's purpose in assigning penalties for a crime was to remove the guilty person from society so that person could not commit such a crime again. God never enunciated "rehabilitation" of a criminal, except through the life-changing salvation that God set in place following personal forgiveness. Whenever you hear anyone say that penalty, specifically the death penalty, does not "deter" a criminal, please remind that person that God intended penalties for sin to remove the criminal from society so they could not commit any crime in the future! Deterrence was never the goal.

  1. Leviticus 18:1-28, God lists many kind of sexual activities that He forbids. Then, in verse 29, God gives the punishment. " For whosoever shall commit any of these abominations, even the souls that commit them, shall be cut off from among their people." The words, "cut off", mean to execute. The various sins that are forbidden in this passage were the same sins American law has forbidden, at least until recently. In each of these instances, the guilty party could find personal forgiveness with God, but will have still suffered the penalty prescribed, death.
  2. Deuteronomy 19:11-13, God declares that the crime of Premeditated Murder shall be dealt with by execution, even if the guilty person has fled to a City of Refuge. In verse 13, God says, "... deliver him into the hand of the avenger of blood, that he may die. Thine eye shall not pity him, but thou shalt put away the guilt of innocent blood from Israel, that it may go well with thee." Even if such a guilty person genuinely repents of his sin, he is not to be spared, but shall be put to death, as the law requires.

American Jurisprudence recognizes this principle and carries it out. Several months ago, the state of Texas executed a woman for a heinous multiple murder. The death sentence was carried out, even though the woman claimed she had been born again, had been changed completely, and would never do the crime again. Yet, Justice was served, as the woman paid her "obligation to society".

Of course, people will be right in pointing out that most criminals facing execution will claim "genuine" remorse and a "religious experience" as a means to avoid the execution.

In Joshua 7:16-26, we see the story of Achan, the Israelite, who had committed the crime of taking gold and silver from the enemy which God had delivered into Israel's hand for annihilation. God led Joshua to Achan. Carefully consider the sequence of events here:

  1. Joshua pleads for Achan to come clean and confess to God for forgiveness. "Joshua said unto Achan, 'My son, give, I pray thee, glory to the LORD God of Israel, and make confession unto him; and tell me now what thou hast done; hide it not from me.' " [Verse 19].
  2. Achan does not hesitate to confess. "And Achan answered Joshua, and said, 'Indeed I have sinned against the LORD God of Israel, and thus and thus have I done': [Achan then goes into great detail in confessing his sin. He does not commit perjury, does not urge his family to lie also, and he does not wag his finger in Joshua's face to deny his action.
  3. In verse 22, we see that Joshua and his men rush to the tent of Achan to confirm his confession. Now, at this point, we might think that Achan would escape serious punishment, because he had confessed right away and had asked the Lord God of Israel for forgiveness. However, the obligation to the Law does not work that way.
  4. In verse 25-26, we see that Joshua and the people of Israel carry out God's sentence of execution. "All Israel stoned him with stones, and burned them with fire, after they had stoned them with stones. And they raised over him a great heap of stones unto this day. So the LORD turned from the fierceness of his anger."

Now, Achan received personal forgiveness from God, and we will see him in Heaven. But, God still insisted on Achan paying the full penalty of the Law.

Nor can you point to King David and Bathsheba to say that Clinton should remain in office as President, even though he may be proven to be guilty of felony crimes. When the Prophet Nathan confronted King David for his personal sin of adultery and murder, David instantly repented, asking God's forgiveness. David did not deny it, he did not wag his finger at Nathan or his Jewish subjects, denying the charges, and David did not lie under oath.

David did not leave his office as king, which he could not do because God had already promised him that the future Messiah would come from his throne. However, a strong case could be made for the fact that David should have been removed from office to spare Israel from God's judgment which followed. In the years following, Israel was in severe turmoil from the Civil War that broke out, led by David's son, Absalom. Had David resigned as King after his affair with Bathsheba had been made known, and of David's murder of her husband, the nation, Israel, would have been spared civil war and much unrest.

Therefore, if any of President Clinton's defenders want to use David's affair with Bathsheba as the example of a ruler not required to resign, they will have to admit that David should have resigned. Likewise, Clinton should resign for the good of this nation and to prevent further judgment from an angry God.

However, we do live in the End of the Age. We expect that the selfishness of President Clinton will continue, and will cause him to resist every effort of the Congress and of the Law to remove him from office, and then prosecute him according to the Law of the land.

Since we are living in the End of the Age, are you spiritually ready? Is your family? Are you adequately protecting your loved ones? This is the reason for this ministry, to enable you to first understand the peril facing you, and then help you develop strategies to warn and protect your loved ones. Once you have been thoroughly trained, you can also use your knowledge as a means to open the door of discussion with an unsaved person. I have been able to use it many times, and have seen people come to Jesus Christ as a result. These perilous times are also a time when we can reach many souls for Jesus Christ, making an eternal difference.

If you have accepted Jesus Christ as your personal Savior, but have been very lukewarm in your spiritual walk with Him, you need to immediately ask Him for forgiveness and for renewal. He will instantly forgive you, and fill your heart with the joy of the Holy Spirit. Then, you need to begin a daily walk of prayer and personal Bible Study.

If you have never accepted Jesus Christ as Savior, but have come to realize His reality and the approaching End of the Age, and want to accept His FREE Gift of Eternal Life, you can also do so now, in the privacy of your home. Once you accept Him as Savior, you are spiritually Born Again, and are as assured of Heaven as if you were already there. Then, you can rest assured that the Kingdom of Antichrist will not touch you spiritually.

If you would like to become Born Again, turn to our Salvation Page now.
